7 Tips To Make Going Vegan Easier | #veganuary

Happy New Year! And happy #veganuary everyone!

Unless you've been living under a rock then you'd know that January is #veganuary. Ive been a strict vegan now since October 10th, 2018 and its the best decision Ive ever made. I feel like Ive been vegan forever. I feel happier, more positive and healthier.

I went vegan briefly in 2017 but I didnt make the ethical connection and I didnt last long. I definitely struggled. But now I am 100% committed and happy to be vegan. I love it!

I've made a list of 7 tips that really helped me go vegan and stick to it so hopefully these tips can help someone else.

Make the ethical connection
I had to put this as my first tip because I think its the most important one. If you haven't made the ethical connection, then going vegan is going to be difficult. You need to find the reason why you want to go vegan and why you are making the lifestyle change otherwise it is going to be really hard. I dont care if you want to be vegan for the environment, your health, animals or all of the above, you just need to focus and make that connection to be successful.

Watch documentaries
My favourite documentaries about veganism is Forks Over Knives and Cowspiracy. When I watched those documentaries I swear my jaw was on the floor the entire time! Its so shocking and some scenes are absolutely heartbreaking to watch. It will leave you wondering "why on earth isn't everyone vegan?!" You will most probably cry at least 12 times and completely doubt the human race but they are great documentaries filled with nothing but TRUTH and FACTS.

Find a vegan friend
I am extremely lucky because my youngest sister is vegan and she has been for about 2 years now. She is the reason why I got into veganism and eventually went vegetarian and then vegan. I also have a really supportive family who will make vegan meals for us but I know this is rare and I am extremely lucky. It can be hard to be vegan when you don't have anyone to talk to about it and to share your journey with. I recommend finding a friend or a vegan group in real life or finding someone to talk to online. There are some great vegans out there you just have to look.

Watch youtube videos
Im going to write a separate post all about my favourite vegan youtubers but I'll share some of my top 2 with you now. Hannah McNeely and Ellen Fisher are my go to vegans to watch. They have separate channels but Hannah and Ellen are sisters who have been vegan for years and years. Ellen lives in Maui with her husband and her 3 vegan children. She posts beautifully shot videos about veganism, food, family life and so much more. She is such a beautiful soul and she inspires me daily as well as Hannah. Hannah lives in California and is a university teacher and vegan activist among many other things and she is so fun and funny! She also had a great podcast that I'll talk about in tip number 7.

Focus on why you want to go vegan
Write a list of reasons why you are making this lifestyle change. Remember veganism is a lifestyle change, not a diet. Whether you're doing it for the environment, your health or for the animals always focus on why you've made this change. For me Ive gone vegan for the animals, the planet and my health so I like to focus on all of these things. 

Find vegan alternatives
You definitely dont have to miss out on your favourite foods when you go vegan. Theres a vegan alternative to everything these days and if not then you can make it vegan yourself. You can make vegan nacho cheese from cashew nuts, nutritional yeast and a few veggies and you can even make things like egg nog, fudge, chocolate spread- you name it! You can veganise every since dish thats out there so you don't have to feel like you're missing out or being restricted.

Listen to a podcast
This is a really easy way to get educated and inspired by veganism because you can listen to a podcast anywhere. My personal favourite podcast which is based on veganism is Earth To Us by Evan Oliver and Hannah McNeely (who is my favourite vegan btw!). They've just stopped releasing new episodes for a while because they are both so busy but dont you worry, theres 49 episodes to listen to over at earthtous.com or over on itunes. A new podcast Ive just started to listen to after Hannah McNeely recommended it in her new video is Food For Thought by Colleen Patrick-Godreau. Ive only listened to a few episodes so far and Im already hooked. This podcast has been going for almost 14 years now and its focuses on compassion and living healthily. Its a great listen and you can find out more about it here. 


There you have 7 of my tips to make going vegan just a little bit easier. I really hope this post helps you out if you are a new vegan or if you are thinking about going vegan. And remember veganism is a lifestyle, not a diet.

    1. Thank you for reading this post Danielle. You could try taking it small by changing just one thing. Maybe just cutting out meat a few meals a week and switching from cows milk to soya milk. :) x
