How To Get A Better Nights Sleep- 10 Tips That Actually Work

Tuesday, 23 February 2016

I am somewhat of an "expert" when it comes to not being able to sleep. I have struggled with sleeping all of my teenage life. I use to suffer with insomnia & I would have to take sleeping pills but it would knock me out for days so I has to find my own ways to relax & sleep. I still get times when I cannot sleep but for the most part my sleeping is good now.
So if you have sleep problems or you want to make sure you get a good night of slumber before a big day, here are some tips that should will help.

Lavendar pillow mist
When my insomnia was flaring up big time around 3 years ago, my nana bought me a Lavendar pillow mist for christmas & it completely changed me. Lavendar is the perfect scent for relaxing and sleeping so by spraying your pillow with it, it will instantly soothe you. As soon as I smell my pillow I feel relaxed. It works really well for me.
Avon, Boots & This Works have great pillow mists.

Comfy pjs
There is nothing worse than wearing pj's to bed that arent soft & cosy. I would recommend buying some nice soft pj's. They dont have to be expensive, I have found some great soft sets from Primark for under £5.

No internet or phone for 30-60 mins before sleeping
This has helped me so much! I use to go on my phone everynight before trying to sleep but since I've stopped doing that I can almost guarantee I will fall asleep far quicker.

Have a routine
Wash your face, brush your teeth and get dressed for bed all in one go that way you are getting yourself ready for bed without any distractions.

Have a warm drink
Whether you are a coffee or tea drinker, having a nice warm drink before sleeping is a nice way to feel cosy and relaxed. All though this may be just be the british in me yelling "a cup of tea will fix everything". Haha! Just make sure its decaf!!

Fresh bedding
This is just a really simple thing to do. But having fresh, clean bedding feels cosy and nice specially if you use a really yummy smelling fabric softner. I like a lavendar scented one.

Meditate
I am a huge fan of meditating and I have been for a good year now. I know a lot of people are a bit sceptical when it comes to meditating- I was one of them. But it is an amazing way to relax your body and mind before bed.

Write a to-do list & whats on your mind
If you are an overthinker like I am, writing down your thoughts and what you need to do the following day can be life-changing. Its also nice to look back and see how you were feeling at a certaint time. And by having a little notepad at your bedside will save you from worrying about forgetting to make an important call, etc.

Tidy up your space
This may be down to my ocd, but I can only sleep when my room is tidy. Clean home= clean & clear mind.

Make your bed
I am well aware that this sounds stupid. Why would you want to make your bed if you are just going to get into it and mess it up? Well making your bed before crawling in is great because you'll be going to sleep without having the sheets slipping off and the duvet a heap on your mattress. Even if you just fluff up your pillows a little. But this reallly helps with me.

What are some of your tips & tricks for getting a better night sleep?

  5. Completely agree about the lists! I actually have a notebook on my bedside to jot everything down that's on my mind before bed so I'm not sitting awake thinking about stuff I have to do. I never thought pillow mists would make such a difference either but they really have for me :) great list xx
